Mosaic Artist BA Hons
Ben Craven has worked with mosaics since graduating from the Winchester School of Art, UK in 1998. His first successful mosaic studio in the City of Brighton UK was the birth place of many works including the Queens' Golden Jubilee memorial for the Sussex Village of Lindfield and also various private commissions both local and international.
Ben lived in Italy for over 10 years and also studied under the acclaimed Cooperativa Mosaicisti of Ravenna in Italy adding the classical Roman and Byzantine mosaic art form to his repertoire. He now lives and works in Goa, India where he continues to create many different types of work for his global clientele. His portfolio includes interior decorative and functional mosaics, exterior works as well as portraiture and fine art pieces.
Ben has taught the different methods of making mosaics to many students and has also worked on restoring important historic mosaics such as the Brighton Dome UK – bringing ancient works back to their former glory. Ben also enjoys combining his sculpture and ceramic making talent with mosaics resulting in stunning and thought provoking pieces. Ben is a member of the MIDAC association and is supported by Terra dell'Arte, Italy. Ben is also a professional member of BAAM, The British Association of Modern Mosaics.
I love mosaic art. I am amazed that beautiful pictures, jewellery, flooring and walls can be made with pieces of coloured rock and tiles. The first time I saw Ben’s work was in a gallery in Goa. I fell instantly in love with his beautiful mosaic art and immediately knew that I wanted to have one for myself. I asked Ben to make a wall hung mosaic for our entryway and asked him to create something especially for our family home. “The Compass Rose” turned out to be the perfect mosaic. Ben interpreted the thought behind the motif as being “Entrance and exit into a home, a place where journeys begin or end”. I love this mosaic so much that a few years later, I asked Ben to make another mosaic representing my love for an art style in Portugal. Ben created “Azulejo Classical”. To complete this piece Ben actually had to fly the pieces to a location and finish it in my home. It was amazing to see Ben work, put his mosaic together, and hang it on my wall finished. He is a talented artist who creates beautiful mosaics.

There is something quite extraordinary about commissioning a piece of art specifically designed for a particular area. As a creative person I always feel inclined to take a chance, whenever possible, to work with an artist to create a piece of work that I can be proud of. Working with Ben has been a unique pleasure for here is someone who truly knows his craft. He is open to the clients artistic inclinations and has the ability to take them further and transform them in to a work that is brilliant and perfectly finished. He works in a very organised manner, quietly and very professionally. At the end of the process, as the owner of the work, you are left with a piece of art that you will want to live with for the rest of your days. That I think is truly wonderful!

I met the versatile mosaic artist Ben Craven almost 10years ago and was very privileged in 2012 to be invited to the opening of his Exhibition in Italy. Set in the ancient village of Belforte del Chienti I met the very people he had so exquisitely portrayed. Twelve local characters bought to life capturing their features in thousands of pieces....they were a work of art like no other. My purchase of Gina the Egg Seller (86×50cm) hangs in my kitchen, she is admired by all and is a daily reminder of Ben Craven's astonishing talent.

Ben is a really talented mosaic artist. He brings something extraordinary to the world of interior decor. So when it came to deciding who could create an eye-catching masterpiece in my hotel lobby, I had only one person in mind. Ben was able to quickly understand what we were looking for and within no time at all had a fabulous sketch of what was to be an amazing installation. His attention to detail, his professionalism and his fair pricing make Ben the person to call when you need an outstanding piece of art!

Working with Ben has been a fascinating and delightful process for me. When I first entered his studio to talk about the work he was going to create he was very open minded and easy to work with. He was also fun to work with and the experience was rewarding and fulfilling. You can trust Ben completely leaving all creative aspects under his control. He delivered a magnificent piece of art that I really enjoyed and cherished looking at every day. I found It was a truly rewarding experience to commission a piece of mosaic art and in turn contribute to reviving a near lost and traditional art form. In my humble opinion he is one of the finest artists I have had the pleasure to meet.
