As a ceramist and sculptor Ben has a special relationship with mosaics and enjoys working with unexpected mediums. His wealth of mosaic experience allows him the insight and vision to characterise his work and produce distinctive and defining pieces.
His other bronze works “Rites of Passage” were produced in India by one of the oldest methods of metal casting – casting in sand. This work was born from the creations of Ben's son's first 'conscious' drawings; his inital attempts at creating deliberate shapes and forms. Every parent at some time remembers the first major event of a child's life, the necessary stages we all go through; stepping stones from childhood through to adulthood. These bronzes are a record of one many such stages. "Rites of Passage" are a limited series of three bronze reliefs (29 cm x 29cm) that reflect the relationship between the language of mosaics and the medium of bronze.
Ben's journey with bronze started when he collaborated with an artistic foundry in Italy where he produced his first bronze series 'Liber Pater' or 'Free Father'; a collection of five reliefs (15cmx20cm) borne from the age old 'lost wax' process. These bronzes allow themselves to speak to their audience through the texture and rhythm of the pattern and material displayed.
The chosen image was inspired by reading 'Ancient Mosaics' by Roger Ling published by the British Museum press, 1998. The bronze series focuses on specific sections of an ancient mosaic, which illustrates the drinking contest between Dionysus and the man-become-god Heracles. There are two editions currently in circulation; one belonging to a private collector in Italy and the other available for exhibition purposes only.
